Came across a superb comment by another wise believer, Robin -
We are all witnesses to God’s love for dualism. Everything he made is symmetric. The temple (body) itself is symmetric where otherwise we observe no other perfect geometrical properties (e.g in nature we do not observe perfect squares or triangles).
I believe that our souls are a part of the God, his soul, the Supersoul. Then assuming that He separated a part of the His soul (Soul is infinite and after parting remains complete) and we were created. But then, conditioning such a powerful force by body made of dust was a problem OR He thought such power of the soul if separated might turn dark so he divided the part into two. Divided, the soul had lost most of its potency and united it would regain it. And maybe this unity of the two souls is the ultimate objective of our long journey though the material worlds.
Of course their is attraction towards other in this journey, sometimes a bond so strong that’s indistinguishable from true love; but our souls are, in fact the same, of a same source. But what is like us is different and stands no match for what is US. The Other Half is not somebody with habits/hobbies similar to ours, but they complement us, they complete each other. So a person who likes music maybe has a soulmate who can sing or play the way he likes and not the one who likes the same music.
Souls can have any gender, gender is unimportant. Gender is just a doorway for other souls to come to the Earth. Sex is for reproduction, but sexual intercourse between two soulmates makes them ‘of one flesh’, the two souls are united the deepest way humanely possible and this is purity and sanctity.
Also, a common observation: Most soulmates who’ve finally met die young, for they have no other reason left to be continuing he journey. They unite after death (often die just after the other) and become one soul and finally unite with the Supersoul. The true Trinity is then complete.

Soulmates
We are eternal because we are all manifestations of God. That is why we go through many lives and many deaths, emerging out of some unknown place and going towards another equally unknown place. You must get used to the fact that there are many things which are not and never will be explained. God decided to do certain things in a certain way and why He did this is a secret known only to him.The fact is that this happens.
When people think of re-incarnation, they always come up against a very difficult question: if, in the beginning, there were so few people on the earth, and now there are so many, where did all those new souls come from?
The answer is simple. In certain reincarnations, we divide into two. Our souls divide as do crystals and stars, cells and plants. Our soul divides in two, and those new souls are in turn transformed into two and so, within a few generations, we are scattered over a large part of Earth. We form part of what the alchemists call the Anima mundi, the Soul of the World. The truth is that if the Anima mundi were merely to keep dividing, it would keep growing, but it would also become gradually weaker. That is why, as well as dividing into two, we also find ourselves. And that process of finding ourselves is called Love. Because when a soul divides, it always divides into a male part and a female part. That's how the Book of Genesis explains it: the soul of Adam was spilt in two, and Eve was born out of him.Human beings are all interlinked, like the cards in a deck, we need them all, all are equally important. In each life, we feel a mysterious obligation to find at least one of these Soulmates. The Greater Love that separated them feels pleased with the Love that brings them together again.
"But how will I know who my Soulmate is?"
You could tell your Soulmate by the light in their eyes, and since time began, that has been how people have recognised their True Love. You will find your soulmate by taking risks. By risking failure, disappointment, disillusion, but never ceasing in your search for Love. As long as u keep looking, u will triumph in the end.
"Is it possible to meet more than one Soulmate in each Life?"
Yes, and when that happens, the heart is divided, and the result is pain and suffering. The essence of Creation is one and one alone. And that essence is called Love. Love is the force that brings us back together, in order to condense the experience dispersed in many lives and many parts of the world. We are responsible for the whole Earth because we do not know where they might be, those Soulmates we were from the beginning of time. If they are well, then we too, will be happy. If they are not well, we will suffer, however unconsciously, a portion of their pain. Above all, though, we are responsible for re-encountering, atleast once in every incarnation(birth), the Soulmate who is sure to cross our path. Even if it is only for a matter of moments, because those moments bring with them a Love so intense that it justifies the rest of our days.We can also allow our Soulmate to pass us by, without accepting him or her, or even noticing. Then we will need another incarnation in order to find that Soulmate. And because of our selfishness, we will be condemned to the worst torture humankind ever invented for itself: loneliness.
The whole of man's Life on Earth can be summed up by the search for his Soulmate. He may pretend to be running after wisdom, money or power, but none of that matters. Whatever he achieves will be incomplete if he fails to find his Soulmate.
(Excerpt from Brida by Paulo Coelho) I read this today and I felt compelled to share this, as it answered some of the questions I had since childhood. Now I understand.
